Christmas Lights – Road Closures in Hedon

AS THE TOWN gets ready for the big Christmas lights switch-on festivities this Friday 27th Nov 2009 then motorists should be aware that road closures will be in operation on that day between 5:00pm and 9:30pm. St Augustine’s Gate, George Street and Market Place will be closed, with Market Place being coned-off from 2pm.

The No. 277 bus will divert its service from 4:30pm avoiding the streets above from Hedon to Preston via Fletchergate, New Road and Hull Road to Saltend Roundabout, and then via Staithes Road to Preston, before returning to its normal route.

Hedon Blog Meet-up at The Station

JUST A REMINDER that the Hedon Blog meeting takes place on Tuesday night (24th November 2009) from 6pm – 7pm in the bar at the Station pub at 63 – 67 Soutergate.

The meeting will be an opportunity to find out a bit more about the Blog and what issues it might take up in the town – and how Hedon folk (and those living in the HU12 post-code area) can get involved. One campaign starting on 1st December is the Hedon Wish List.

I look forward to meeting you at the meeting – Ray Duff, The Hedon Blogger.

NOTE: Your visit to the Station can also be an opportunity to find out what else is going on in that public house. Your jovial hosts Carl and Jackie have put together a programme of activities and entertainment in the run up to Christmas. This includes:

Flood defence work starts at Hedon

THE ENVIRONMENT AGENCY is about to start flood defence work at Hedon to improve the flood protection for over 350 properties.

They will be raising the low spots in the existing flood banks along Burstwick Drain, starting tomorrow 23 November 2009. The town suffered during the major region-wide floods of 2007.

The work will be complicated by the number of properties lining the banks of Burstwick Drain, where the only access is through private gardens.

The Agency’s project manager, explains:

This could be slow and complicated work, as our contractors will have to enter each property separately and carry materials in by hand. Where we need access we’ll be giving two weeks notice, but the majority of properties will be unaffected until after Christmas. The contractors are Jacksons Civil Engineering, and they’ll be doing all they can to minimise disruption and inconvenience, especially when they are working on people’s properties. There could also be an increase in road traffic.”

The flood defences will reduce the risk of flooding to houses if Burstwick Drain overflows. Currently, the chance of flooding occurring if Burstwick Drain overtops is about 10 per cent in any year.  By building these flood defences, it is intended to reduce the risk to 0.5 per cent in any year.

What’s happening to old Sports Hut on Drapers Lane football ground?

THE OLD HEDON AFC sports hut on the corner of Draper’s Lane playing fields has lain derelict for years now.

It is an eyesore. Despite a police notice it has become a playground in ways that are totally different from its original purpose.

This article constitutes a simple request to the authorities responsible for the hut and the land it is on: What is planned for this building? Is it eventually going to be refurbished and brought into community use – or is it going to be properly demolished?

The picture shows the front and rear views of the building.  The map below shows the location of the hut as reported on the FixMyStreet neighbourhood reporting website.

Hull Digital – Successful Meet-Up

HULL DIGITAL MET LAST NIGHT in Hessle and was a great opportunity for the local “digiterati” to meet up. An important discussion took place on Digital Inclusion led by Helen Philpott from North East Lincolnshire. Helen showed a video from the Government funded Digital Inclusion Team which is republished below.

A range of useful devices from Solwise to ‘disguise’ your internet connection were also displayed, along with products to get internet connections into difficult places i.e. tunnels.

Are you interested in all things digital? What services do you think are needed in Hedon?

Identify traffic hotspots in Hedon

WHICH AREAS OF HEDON are traffic hotspots? Where are accidents most likely to occur?

Jean wrote about Market Hill:

Why oh why do we have double yellow lines on Market Hill? Please visit at 8.55 and 11.25 and likewise in the afternoon when the nursery children are dropped off and picked up. Many of the parents and guardians who drive up think ‘oh well, I’ll only be a minute’, but they don’t realise that there are many other selfish people like themselves doing the same thing. Add to that the visitors to the two doctors’ surgeries, Hedon Hire, and normal traffic, and you have chaos, and one day a tragedy. It’s even more manic when it is raining! More car parks are not the answer – that would lead to more cars. What we need is education, we need our children to get used to walking, yes, even in the rain, heaven forbid. Please leave your cars at home unless you live out of Hedon.

Do you agree that Market Place is a source of chaos and an accident waiting to happen? Leave your comments below.

Meanwhile the Hedon Blog will ask the East Riding Council to offer a viewpoint on this.
