Today is Safer Internet Day – Think B4 U post!

“THINK B4 U POST” is the message from Safer Internet Day held today Tuesday 9th February 2010.

Safer Internet Day is organised by Insafe each year in February to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially amongst children and young people across the world.

The message is simple: Photos, once online, remain online and can be seen by anybody, even years after they have been posted. So THINK before you post anything that you might regret later.

The Campaign Video sums up the message in a few seconds!

HU12.net under construction

A NEW COMMUNITY WEBSITE for the HU12 post-code community is currently under construction to enhance and develop the services brought to you by the Hedon Blog.

The new site currently at http://hu12net.blogspot.com will eventually (i.e. not yet!) be available at the domain www.hu12.net following its formal launch.

The new HU12 website will be able to bring you many more interactive features not currently available on the Hedon Blog at wordpress.com. Most news stories will eventually be posted daily on the new HU12 website. The Hedon Blog will concentrate on featuring local community events, activities and meetings as these are notified.

The new website will also be able to take adverts from local businesses and service providers which will allow us to generate some income in order to produce more publicity materials and allow us to develop our news gathering operation more effectively.

PLEASE NOTE the site is currently UNDER CONSTRUCTION and will not be available to view at all times and is liable to frequent changes in style and format. However, we are asking Hedon Blog readers to visit the new site and give us your:

  1. opinions on the new site;
  2. notifications of things that don’t work;
  3. views on the type of content you would prefer to see on it ;
  4. preferences for the header picture, theme and colours used on the site – everything can be customised!

If any local businesses or service providers want to get more information on advertising opportunities as it becomes available, then please drop off an e-mail to hedonblog@gmx.com expressing your interest.

Finally, rest assured while the new website is being constructed, the Hedon Blog will continue to provide its usual service of news and information.

Neighbourhood Reporting – Community Walkabouts

THE HEDON BLOG has played a small role in helping residents raise issues that concern them with the authorities that might be able to help. The Blog has highlighted services such as Fix My Street which can help people report neighbourhood problems such as street lights that need repairing.

Another way that residents can help identify local problems in order to get them sorted is via a hot-spots patrol or COMMUNITY WALKABOUT.

Hot Spots Patrol in Coventry

A community walkabout is where residents and local service providers – for example the local neighbourhood police team and council – get together in daylight and walk around the local neighbourhood. Problems like graffiti, fly-tipping, broken street lights or potholes can be identified and a commitment made by service providers to resolve the problems, or at least explain clearly to local residents what can be done.

Community walkabouts can forge better links between citizens who are active in their communities and service providers. Most importantly they can provide reassurance to the wider community that annoying neighbourhood problems are tackled.

Community walk abouts are cheap to organise – all you need is commitment from the community and the time of local service providers.  In Hedon any walkabouts might take place on set times throughout the year and perhaps concentrate on the Westlands, Inmans and other areas of the town?

What do you think about the idea of community walkabouts in Hedon?

Rebirth of Hedon Haven – The Challenge

THE HEDON RESTORATION PROJECT is celebrated in a new exhibition at Hedon Museum.

A group of local residents have been working on proposals for over 10 years to re-open Hedon Haven. The Haven was a watercourse linking to the Humber that once made Hedon one of the most important ports in the country. The Haven was filled in during the early 1970s.

The Restoration Project has an ambitious £17m plan that involves re-opening the waterway and building a marina and country park.

Rebirth of the Haven – The story of the Challenge is at Hedon Museum every Saturday and Wednesday from 10am – 4pm until March 3rd 2010.

Have you seen the exhibition? Leave a comment and let the Hedon Blog know what you think about it.

Happy Birthday! The Hedon Blog is one year old today!

THE HEDON BLOG came into existence a year ago today. In the very first blog post the Blog (then called Our Hedon Adventure) commented on the Hedon Museum and its enthusiastic volunteer staff.

We start the second year of existence by featuring another exhibition in the museum (see next post)….

Consultation on NHS Car Parking Charges

THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH is consulting on proposals to provide ‘free’ NHS hospital car-parking for inpatients and their visitors. This is a significant consultation document that unfortunately is only available online.

Car parking at hospitals is an emotive issue. It can really affect a patient’s and visitor’s view of a particular hospital and time spent in it. From that point of view alone it is a real shame that this consultation document is not more widely available.
