THE HEDON WISH LIST has already generated some interesting ideas. But one suggestion submitted deserves an early mention:

An annual New Years celebration on Market Hill for the families of Hedon.  The beacon could be lit.”

A simple idea but one which could become a real event and focus point for Hedon residents. In many towns and cities there are natural meeting points where local people and Hogmanay visitors gather to wish each other well and enjoy the count-down to the New Year. So why not in Hedon?

THE FUNERAL of Hedon Opera Star Amy Black will take place at St Augustine’s Church in the town on Monday 7th December at 1.30pm.

People have been signing a Book of Condolences which is available at the John Dennis Estate Agents Office in St Agustine’s Gate. The Book will be taken to the church for the service.

AROUND SPRING of this year I contacted the town clerk via email, the latest on 27^th Nov, in regard to a sign that I hoped would be placed near to the Kingstown Hotel, possibly adjacent or on the Preston sign, this would say “Leading to the Historic Town of Hedon”.

Why? Because I have been asked on a few occasions by people in cars near to the Coop supermarket on Hull Road the B1362, just where Hedon is; they said they were confused by the Preston sign, and I also know of some contractors who went down the bypass and came into Hedon via Thorn road.

Joanna Richardson Hedon’s Town Clerk says that I have received the backing of Hedon Town Council but we still await any information or contact from Mr. Mike Peeke who is the Highways Officer for the East Riding, so we wait and wait?

THE EAST RIDING COUNCIL is encouraging people to shop in East Yorkshire towns by offering free car-parking for the three weekends in the run up to Christmas.

Council leader Stephen Parnaby has stated “We hope people take advantage of the free parking by coming to East Riding towns to do their Christmas shopping.”

Parking will be free in council-run car parks from 8:00am on Saturdays until 8am on Mondays….

Fantastic! …. So we assume that free car-parking will help support local shops!? …. So surely the reverse must be true and that the stalled plans of the Council to review and introduce car-parking charges must NOT be in the best interests of supporting local shops during recession!?

HEDON DRAMA GROUP are currently rehearsing for their latest production of ALADDIN.

The popular pantomime will be performed from Thursday 28th January – Saturday 30th January 2010 and the Group is looking for anybody who can offer help acting, backstage or front of house.

“We are a friendly welcoming Drama Group who have been running in Hedon for 65 years. We meet on a Thursday evening at the Alexandra Hall, 7:30pm – 9:30pm. We welcome members of all ages from 14 – 100! NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY.”

THE LOCAL BRANCH of the Parkinson’s Disease Society are holding a Christmas Carol Service at St Augustine’s Church, Hedon on Saturday 19th December 2009 from 6pm – 7pm.

The Hull and East Yorkshire Branch is a self-help group of the Society and are holding the event as a fundraiser and monies raised will go towards the Society and also to the Church Restoration Fund.

The main aim of the group is to improve the quality of life for people with Parkinson’s and their carers and to find a cure for this debilitating condition. If you have an interest in, or suffer from Parkinson’s Disease then you can contact the group for further information.

The Community Legal Advice service also has a website at www.communitylegaladvice.org.uk where people can download the free information they need to help them with many common legal problems.  They can also search themselves for an advice provider near them.

Hedon Wish List 2010 with The Hedon Blog

“Imagine the kind of place we want Hedon to be!”

THE HEDON BLOG wants to grow an online conversation about the town. That conversation can cover everything that matters to local people and can be shared with the rest of the world via the internet.

This campaign will aim to generate a Town ‘Wish List’. This will list all ideas that people have for making Hedon a better place to live and work in.

The Wish List will reflect individual ambitions and constructive proposals for the town. Let’s imagine the kind of place we want Hedon to be!

The Wish List should not be a list of negatives: If you know of a problem, then what is a possible answer? You can be as imaginative as you like.

Examples:

A town that doesn’t have dangerous traffic going through its centre!

• Traffic calming measures
• Community speed watch
• More safer crossing areas

More things for young people to do!

• Extend the Youth Club opening times
• Speak to young people about what they want and would use

Once we have developed the wish list, we will prioritise it into realistic actions that can be tackled now, sooner or later. We will look at the actions that need to take place in order to make the priorities happen! And who can help us achieve some of these: Councils, MPs, NHS, business, voluntary organisations, etc?

The Wish List will open for ideas on Tuesday 1^st December 2009 and will close on Sunday 31^st January 2010.
