Sergeant at MaceHedon’s Great Mace is the oldest civic Mace in England and is the symbol of the monarch in Hedon. It shows to the world that the town’s Mayor is acting with royal authority. The Sergeant at Mace in historic times would also have the role of protecting the Mayor, but today’s Sergeant is a ceremonial role.
