A TWO KILOMETRE sponsored swim – that’s 80 lengths and 90 minutes of swimming! – has netted the local branch of the MS Society (Multiple Sclerosis) with £703.50.
Yvonne Billany from Hedon and Joanne Baxter from Paull were the star swimmers who achieved the task after six months of training! Remarkably Yvonne, who has MS, says that she can now swim faster than she can walk! But this wasn’t always the case; when she took up swimming last year as a form of gentle exercise, the very act used to leave her breathless. Yvonne persevered however, and soon she and her personal assistant Joanne were increasing their stamina and clocking up the number of lengths they could achieve.
Between them they decided they needed a way to mark their achievement and set themselves a challenge as well – a sponsored swim! After the training period they undertook their swimming challenge at the Hornsea Leisure Centre on the 25th June. Family and friends had gathered at the pool to cheer them on as they completed their hour and a half long challenge.
Representatives and members from the Hull, Beverley Borough and Holderness Branch of the MS Society gathered at Paull yesterday for the cheque presentation by Yvonne – sadly Joanne was not able to attend due to illness.
Ros Hinchliffe, Branch Secretary, received the giant cheque from Yvonne: “A very impressive achievement!” she said, “and thanks to all those that have helped and sponsored Yvonne and Joanne. We have some really lovely members and supporters!”
Ann Wordingham the Branch Support officer said the funds raised would go towards the Branch Anniversary appeal: “The Branch will be 60 years old in November 2015 and by that date we would like to raise £60,000 for research. This is on top of our normal fundraising activities towards our transport, grants, telephone helpline, information and other services.”
The Holderness Group of the MS Society meet on the second Monday of every month at the Paull Village Hall from 10am – 1pm with a wide variety of both MS and non-MS related activities on offer. The Group is for those with MS and for those who care for someone with MS.
