Happy 100th Birthday Joan!

Happy birthday Joan Johnson 100JOAN JOHNSON celebrated her 100th birthday on Saturday 23rd August 2014. Members of her family and friends travelled from around the globe to meet up and celebrate with her.

Joan, the youngest of seven children, was born in Swinburn Street, Hull at the beginning of the First World War.

In 1937 Joan married Frank Johnson and moved to Hedon to live at 17 Ketwell Lane. They had three children, Dennis, Barrie and Margaret.

Two years after Margaret was born Frank and Joan moved into Wordsworth House on New Road, Hedon. It was here they started their business – Johnsons DIY turning the ground floor of the house into the shop and living in a flat above the business. They continued to live there until retirement in 1973 when the business was sold to the Brooke’s family. Frank and Joan moved into a bungalow opposite the shop.

Joan continued to live in the bungalow until four years ago when she moved into Hawthorne House, Ketwell Lane, Hedon – next door to the house she started married life in.

With many thanks to Kate Danby for telling us about her Aunt Joan’s wonderful and momentous occasion and sharing the photo of Joan with her 100th birthday message from the Queen!

  1. Well done Joan and Congratulations, 100 not out!
As a youngster, I remember your hardware shop very well, you and the late Frank were always very polite and helpful. My late Dad was a regular customer at your premises near Middle Lane.
The two of you built up what became a very popular and well known business for all those years…………
