LAST WEEK week Graham Stuart MP and local East Riding councillors John Dennis and Mike Bryan visited the new Active Day Care Centre on Tower House Lane, Hedon Road.
The young adults who use the centre challenged the MP to a game of pool and – according to our informant – in very un-diplomatic fashion, the Member of Parliament for Beverley and Holderness “wiped the floor with them!”.
Now the young people are itching for a re-match! Craig one of the service users is desperate to play the MP again – but when we visited yesterday it was Ashley who was in training to beat him!
The new day care centre in Hedon opened this year to offer energetic and dynamic activities for young adults with learning difficulties. Mr Stuart had called into the centre last Friday to hear more about how it’s transforming the lives of the young adults involved, and it was while there that the pool challenge took place! Mr Stuart and Craig from the centre went head-to-head – or rather it was left to the MP to exhibit his pool prowess!
There was obviously a serious side to the visit, and Mr Stuart said: “It was inspirational to see the drive and enthusiasm of the staff, members and their families. I’m pleased to see a dynamic focus on day care provision for younger, more active adults and am looking forward to seeing the centre go from strength to strength.”
Active Day Care recognises that younger adults can be bored at day care centres with older or less able members, and so is offering a wide-range of lively activities to inspire and encourage younger people.
Rebecca Baxter, with 15 years prior experience of working in a local authority children and young people’s department, is one of the managers of the family run enterprise. She emphasised that the day service centre was trying to fill a gap in local services. “There’s very little provision for young adults with learning disabilities. Having left education then it’s quite often the case that activities on offer are for people of all ages and conditions – but like all young people there’s a need to mix with people of your own age and own interests.”
Tom Brown, Centre Manager, commented: “Here at Active Day Care, as well as pool we’ve got table tennis, air hockey, a Wii games room and have computers and wi-fi available. We also have a mini-bus and do – and plan to do – a variety of trips. Amongst the favourites are the National Railway and the Air Museums in York, Doncaster Dome swimming, Junction 32 – and we’ve recently visited Leeds Royal Armouries which was wonderful.”
Rebecca added: “Those attending Active Day Care decide between them where they would like to visit – the staff will prompt them with new ideas, but basically they set up their own programme of events. We aim it to be fun and stimulating. This is really a day care service centre – but everyone here just calls it The Club.”
Vicky Potter, whose daughter Becky attends the Centre said, “My daughter has a better quality of life here, she loves History and Active Day Care is making a big difference to her. It isn’t just a break but something worthwhile in itself.”
Councillor John Dennis said of his visit: “I was delighted by what we saw there, and the dedication, care and ingenuity shown by the team led by Tom, Rebecca and Vicky. It is early days yet as it is a very new project and it deserves to succeed as it will provide a much-needed facility in this district. Councillor Bryan and I will be doing what we can to raise awareness of the centre in the communities we represent.”
