Hedon Primary School celebrates after being rated as a ‘good’ school

Staff, pupils, parents and governors at Hedon Primary School are celebrating after it was rated as a ‘good’ school by Ofsted.

Hedon Primary School logoInspectors say standards have risen throughout the school since it was ranked as ‘requiring improvement’ in a previous inspection two years ago. Following the latest inspection, the school is now ranked as ‘good’ in all areas.

The inspectors’ report says strong leadership has been the key factor behind the marked improvements made since the earlier inspection. It says pupils get off to a strong start to their learning in the early years and the school prepares pupils well for life in modern Britain.

Quality of teaching has improved markedly since the previous inspection, and is now typically good. Pupils are keen to learn and they attend school more regularly. The broad and balanced curriculum provides a wide range of opportunities which interest and engage them and motivate them to try their best. The governors know the school well, holding leaders to account for the standards achieved and checking that new developments benefit pupils.

Headteacher Amanda Barnett said: “This report reflects the hard work, ambition and drive of pupils, staff and governors at Hedon Primary School. We are all delighted that the positive changes over the last two years have been acknowledged, and that the high quality education on offer at Hedon Primary School has been recognised.”

Mike Furbank, the council’s head of children and young people, education and schools, said: “The progress the school has made is remarkable. It is due to the hard work of staff, governors and children and the leadership of the headteacher in driving improvement at a rapid pace.”

Councillor John Dennis, East Riding of Yorkshire Councillor, said: “This is excellent news for all concerned. As Ward Member and the Mayor at the time I attended meetings with East Riding Officers and the Head Teacher after the previous Ofted report, and everyone was determined to put matters right. Obviously it’s very worrying when a school has problems with its Ofsted rating, but great credit is due to Amanda Barnett and her team for the effort they have put in to sorting things out there.

“Hedon Primary, or Ketwell as it’s locally known, is a lovely little school and I congratulate the Head Teacher, her staff, and of course the pupils on gaining their ‘good’ ranking.”
