Appeal against refusal to permit housing development on Wychcroft, Hedon.

A Planning Application for permission to build 28 homes on Wychcroft, Magdalen Lane, Hedon was refused by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council in December 2015. However, the Applicant Mr. Peter Read of Birstall May Ltd has now lodged an appeal with the Planning Inspectorate against East Riding Council’s refusal.

News of the appeal has prompted a group of concerned residents into action. They remember the big floods of 2007 and are sceptical that the flood alleviation plans put forward by the applicant can protect nearby properties from flooding.

The group of residents will employ the services of an engineering consultant to study the drainage and flood alleviation design element of the scheme and assess it independently. To this end, residents have been circulating letters asking for pledges of support towards the costs of this consultancy. They emphasise that this is a private fundraising initiative and has nothing to do with the East Riding or Hedon Town councils.

Monday 23rd May 2016 is the date for interested parties to issue statements and/or comments.

Update from Margaret and Stuart Murray on behalf of the concerned residents:

“We have had a great response to our appeal letter and have raised over £300 to date towards our target of £1000. If anyone wishes to confirm their pledge towards this total, they can email wytchcroft@murray-bond.co.uk with the amount they are prepared to donate.”

We will bring you more news on the Hedon Blog as it becomes available.

  2. Thank you for that though how on earth you can do that unless you want to develop the land yourself and are getting Mr Read to do it for you.

  3. I have lived in Hedon since the 60’s and it was my understanding that “Witchcroft” was gifted to the people of Hedon and that the council owned the land. My question is how did Mr Read aquire it.

    • It was never in the ownership of the town council, Beverley, but the field known as Watson Park is – and i think you’re confusing the two. Watson park is the field immediately to the left as you look at the aerial shot above.
